Moment Work and Stage Combat

Taught by Scott Barrow

Violence onstage (literal or mental) often occurs at the most pivotal and heightened places in the production. How can we as the creators of theatre use all the elements of the stage to magnify the impact and our own understanding of these events?

This workshop uses the principals of Moment Work™ to unpack and explore the language of violence. Participants will create complex moments and sequences that explore the themes and images behind the reasons why characters fight and how we can best articulate them. Participants do not need to have previous experience with stage combat to engage fully in this workshop.

Scott Barrow has been working with Tectonic Theatre Project since 2005 as a master Moment Work teacher, collaborator on new works, and as an actor in 33 Variations, the first tour of The Laramie Cycle, The Album and Uncommon Sense. Scott teaches Moment Work workshops for Tectonic all across the country, including a year-long residency at Drew University, where he and Barbara Pitts McAdams helped students develop, fully design, and stage an adaptation of Kafka’s Metamorphosis and an original immersive play called 4320p: Immersion.

As a Fight Director Scott has always been interested in unconventional ways to explore violence onstage. He has Fight Directed or choreographed 7 shows with New York Theatre Workshop, worked with CSC, Vineyard Playhouse, New Light, the Olney, New Rep and many others. Most recently, Scott collaborated with Steve Maler, Commonwealth Shakespeare, and Google as the Stunt and Fight Coordinator for their VR production of HAMLET 360-Thy Father’s SpiritAs an actor, Scott has also played major roles in New York at New York Workshop, Arena Stage, the Arden Theatre, Arkansas Repertory, Nevada Shakespeare in the Park, DC’s Studio Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, Trinity Rep, and Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse (where he is an Artistic Associate), Shakespeare and Company, The Wilma, and more. Drawing on a decade of experience as an uninterested and mediocre student, Scott has been developing alternative ways to engage students and creatively explore classroom subjects with Stages on the Sound, where he is the Artistic Director.
